Does Your State Have the Worst Drivers?

Scores Of Travelers Depart For Long Holiday Weekend

When it comes to the nation's worst drivers, everyone seems to have an opinion on which state is the worst. After all, an estimated 6,452,000 drivers in the United States got into an accident in 2017, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, so there's no shortage on bad drivers.

However, some areas of the country - especially the larger and busier cities - are chock-full of inconsiderate, terrible drivers as Allstate Insurance's America's Safe Drivers 2019 Report shows. The annual report released by the insurance company rates the nation's 200 largest metropolitan areas on how often their residents report getting into a wreck.

“The goal of the America’s Best Drivers Report is to make our roads safer and ultimately save lives,” said Ken Rosen, Allstate’s Chief Claims Officer. “Each of us needs to ask how we can do our part in our day-to-day lives and for our communities. And beyond that, this country needs to come together to address pressing safety issues, such as rebuilding our roadway infrastructure to reduce risky conditions on America’s roads.”

If you're looking to hit the roads for a summer vacation, you might want to skip the following cities if you want to avoid a potential collision.

“Whether it’s a holiday trip or a routine drive to work, safety should always be along for the ride,” said IIHS president Dr. David Harkey. “The best drivers buckle up on every trip, obey the speed limit and never drive while impaired or distracted. If everyone followed these rules, we would have fewer crashes, injuries and deaths every day of the year.”

If you're heading out on a long road trip for the upcoming Fourth of July holiday, it's always a good idea to keep these things in mind:

  • Always keep your eyes on the road and minimize distractions like using your cell phone.
  • Obey the speed limit. Leave early enough to give yourself plenty of time to arrive to your destination.
  • Buckle your safety belt and ensure that all your passengers do so as well.
  • Never drive while impaired by alcohol or drugs.
  • Leave plenty of following distance between yourself and the vehicle you're following. The faster you're traveling, the longer your vehicle will need to come to a stop.
