The Dallas Cowboys are reportedly looking to replace head coachĀ Jason GarrettĀ after the team suffered their seventh loss of the season when they succumbed to the Chicago Bears on Thursday night (December 5). AĀ new report fromĀ Jane SlaterĀ of NFL Network says thatĀ Stephen Jones, the Cowboys Director of Player Personnel, recently met with former college coachĀ Urban MeyerĀ about coming out of retirement and taking the helm of an NFL team.
Meyer spent 17 seasons coaching in college with an impressive 187ā32 record while serving as head coach at Bowling Green, Utah, Florida, and Ohio State. He won two national championships with Florida and one while at Ohio State. He retired after the Rose Bowl in 2019.
Slater said that the team is also looking at Oklahoma coachĀ Lincoln RileyĀ and Clemson offensive coordinatorĀ Tony ElliottĀ as potential replacements for Garrett.
Despite the rumors that the Cowboys are looking to find a new coach, the team's owner,Ā Jerry Jones, has repeatedly said that they have no plans to fire Garrett in the middle of the season.
"We'll line them up here next week. We're gonna go practice, and we're going to try to win a football game,"Ā said Jones. "Everybody that's in here that's healthy, everybody that's healthy that's coaching will be coaching, everybody that's in here will be playing. We just got to play better."
Despite losing three straight games andĀ falling to 6-7, the Cowboys are still leading the NFC East. The Philadelphia Eagles are in second place, with a record of 5-7. The two teams face off for the second time in week 16. The Cowboys won the first matchup between the division rivals in week 7.
