Dr. Amie Harwick, a well-known sex and family therapist who worked with celebrities and wrote about sex and relationships, died at her Hollywood Hills home on Saturday and her ex-boyfriend has been arrested on suspicion of her murder, police said Sunday.

Harwick, who was once engaged to comedian Drew Carey, was discovered on the ground beneath a third-story window by police after they received reports of a woman screaming at around 1:16 a.m. Saturday, a news release from the Los Angeles Police Department said. Officers were met by Harwick's roommate, who told police Harwick was being assaulted inside their home. The roommate had jumped the wall and went to a neighbor's house to call police.

Police say Harwick was found with injuries consistent with a fall and unconscious after she'd apparently fallen from a third-story balcony window. Harwick was taken to a local hospital where she later died from her injuries.

Police say an investigation of the scene showed possible evidence of a struggle upstairs and forced entry into the Hollywood Hills home. A suspect was seen entering and leaving the property after the murder on surveillance video.

Her ex-boyfriend, Gareth Pursehouse, 41, of Playa Del Rey, was arrested by members of an FBI-LAPD Fugitive Task Force at around 4:30 p.m. Detectives say Harwick had previously filed a restraining order against him, but it had expired. He's currently being held on $2 million bail.

"Detectives learned that [the] victim had recently expressed fear about a former boyfriend and had previously filed a restraining order against this person," the LAPD said in a news release. "The restraining order had expired and the victim had seen this former boyfriend two weeks ago."
