U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson Transferred to Intensive Care Unit

PM Attends Final PMQs Before Parliament Suspended Due To Coronavirus

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been transferred to intensive care at St. Thomas' Hospital in London, according to a statement from 10 Downing Street.

"Over the course of this afternoon, the condition of the Prime Minister has worsened and, on the advice of his medical team, he has been moved to the Intensive Care Unit at the hospital," a spokesperson said in a statement.

Johnson was admitted to the hospital Sunday night after experiencing "persistent symptoms" of COVID-19, a statement from the British government said. Johnson was admitted to undergo several routine tests on the advice of his doctor after he experienced the coronavirus symptoms over the last 10 days.

Earlier on Monday, Johnson provided an update on his condition, writing on Twitter that he was in "good spirits."

"Last night, on the advice of my doctor, I went into hospital for some routine tests as I’m still experiencing coronavirus symptoms," Johnson wrote on Twitter. "I’m in good spirits and keeping in touch with my team, as we work together to fight this virus and keep everyone safe."

"The PM has asked Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, who is the First Secretary of State, to deputise for him where necessary," Johnson's office added. "The PM is receiving excellent care, and thanks all NHS staff for their hard work and dedication."

Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick told the BBC that Johnson was still "very much in charge of the government.

"I'm sure this is very frustrating for him, for somebody like Boris who wants to be hands [on] running the government from the front," Jenrick said.
