Wegmans Markets has implemented a limit on egg purchases due to a national shortage caused by an avian flu outbreak. Customers can now buy up to 10 cartons of a dozen or 18-count eggs, with a maximum of 180 eggs per purchase. This move aligns Wegmans with other major retailers like Costco, Walmart, and Aldi, which have also set purchase limits to manage supply and demand.
The avian flu has forced farmers to cull millions of chickens, leading to reduced egg supplies and increased prices. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, egg prices have nearly doubled over the past year, rising from $2.52 in February 2024 to $4.95 in January 2025. Currently, Wegmans' most affordable dozen eggs are priced at $5.49, excluding tax.
Wegmans stated that their New York state supplier is taking every precaution to keep flocks healthy, and the company is committed to maintaining competitive prices despite fluctuating supplies. The U.S. Agriculture Department predicts that egg prices could increase by another 20% this year.
Other grocery chains have also imposed limits, with Trader Joe's having the strictest policy, allowing only one dozen eggs per customer per day. As the shortage continues, consumers may face ongoing restrictions and price increases.
