Conservative activist Charlie Kirk was shot and killed while hosting a debate at Utah Valley University on Wednesday (September 10). According to The Guardian, Kirk was sitting underneath a tent while speaking to students around 12:10 p.m. when he was shot in the neck.

President Donald Trump announced that Kirk died from his injuries.

While initial reports suggested that police had a suspect in custody, officials said that the man seen being detained in video shared on X was not the gunman.

Newsweek reported that the suspect fired a single shot from the roof of a building about 200 yards away from the event, which was hosted by Turning Point USA.

FBI Director Kash Patel responded to the shooting in a post on X, promising the full support of the FBI.

"We are closely monitoring reports of the tragic shooting involving Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University. Our thoughts are with Charlie, his loved ones, and everyone affected. Agents will be on the scene quickly and the FBI stands in full support of the ongoing response and investigation," Patel wrote.

Patel later announced that authorities have detained a person of interest in the shooting. However, Patel later said that the individual was released after being interrogated by law enforcement and that the suspect is still at large.
