Anthony Mackie & Stephanie Beatriz Rev Up Chaos in Twisted Metal Season 2 on Pop Culture Weekly with Kyle McMahon

Let’s be honest - when Twisted Metal Season 1 dropped, most of us had the same question: Are we really about to get a live-action series based on the chaotic, demolition-derby fever dream of a video game? The answer was 'Yes'! And somehow, it really worked.

Now, with Twisted Metal Season 2 barreling onto Peacock like a flaming clown car with a grudge, the show is leaning harder into its absurdity, its mayhem, and surprisingly, its heart. And leading that charge? Anthony Mackie and Stephanie Beatriz, aka your new favorite post-apocalyptic duo.

Anthony Mackie (Captain America: Brave New World, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) and Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) might not be the first two actors you’d expect to anchor a show based on a game where the main character is a murderous ice cream truck clown, but here we are - and they’re killing it. Their chemistry is electric, their timing is sharp and their performances somehow ground the bonkers world of Twisted Metal in something real. Or as real as a dystopian road-warrior saga featuring a flaming paper bag best friend can be.

“I love the idea of cutting somebody’s head off and laughing about it at the same time,” Mackie told me on Pop Culture Weekly. “There’s something really cool about funny gore that works really well with the common person and being able to relate to it.”

Look, I don’t know what that says about the “common person,” but Mackie’s not wrong. The tone of Twisted Metal is part Mad Max, part Looney Tunes, and somehow Mackie’s John Doe makes it all work.

Beatriz, meanwhile, shines as Quiet. Her name ironically fitting for a character who does not come to play. She’s fierce, funny and manages to deliver both killer zingers and emotional depth in the same breath.

“I just really like silly, stupid comedy,” Beatriz told me. “And I wanted so badly to do more action. When I read the scripts for Season 1, I was like, ‘Oh, this is so smart and silly and wild and I’ve never seen anything like it.’ It’s totally unhinged.”

If Season 1 was a surprise cult hit, Season 2 is the full-throttle glow-up. The action is bigger. The cast is stacked. The characters have more room to breathe - and punch - and explode things. And somehow, amid all the chaos, Mackie and Beatriz keep the emotional center intact. Their partnership is the heart of the show, even when they’re dodging missiles or arguing in bulletproof cars.

The tournament storyline this season adds layers to the madness, giving every character - from clown to cannibal - a motive and a mission. And thanks to Mackie and Beatriz, the stakes feel just high enough to keep you invested between the explosions and dark comedy.

wisted Metal Season 2 is the kind of wild, genre-mashing, don’t-think-too-hard joyride we rarely get anymore. It’s the TV equivalent of downing a Red Bull and hitting the gas - and Anthony Mackie and Stephanie Beatriz are the perfect co-drivers for the trip.

If you haven’t started watching, now’s the time. If you have, let’s talk about it. Flaming clown heads, paper bag friendships, and unexpected emotional arcs - this show’s got it all.

Twisted Metal Season 2 is now streaming exclusively on Peacock.
